We've recently had NCM, NPM and SAM in the organisation. I have a question regarding nested dependencies and groups, and the correct practice to follow when setting this up.
Our customers have a Router, Firewall, Switch, Server (sometimes, but not always a Hyper-V / VMware host), then virtual machines
All devices, except the router, are monitored using SNMP or the Agent installation on physical/virtual servers. The router is always ICMP only.
I've seen a few posts where it's been advised to have the router or firewall as the parent, then all other devices grouped together as then children.
However, during our installation and initial configuration consultation we were advised to have dependencies between each device...
So the VM's are dependant on the VMWare Host, the VMWare Host is dependant on the Switch, the Switch is dependant on the Firewall, the Firewall is dependant on the Router etc etc etc
At the time this made sense to me but now I'm not so sure after what I've read on the Thwack forums.
