Looking for list of NCM variables

I'm looking for a complete list of built-in variables that I could use in NCM scripts or change templates.

Specifically, I'm trying to mass change the hostname and domain of Cisco devices based on the Node Name in Solarwinds database. We recently adopted a new naming convention, so we re-named the devices in NPM / NCM hoping to automate the process of renaming the devices itself.

I want to run a script that would look something like this:

conf t

hostname ${NodeName}

ip domain-name ${NodeDomain}

exit

wri mem

But I can't seem to find the correct variables to use. I saw a list of NCM global variables listed in the Admin Guide, but didn't find what I was looking for. I was thinking of parsing out the domain and hostname out of the Solarwinds Node name.

Any help would be appreciated.

NCM 7.5 - How to get Palo Alto Networks configs downloaded as XML

$

I was excited when I saw that 7.5 is going to support binary downloads. I'm hoping that will allow me to download configs from some PA-200 firewalls as XML, rather than the text (?) output that is currently getting pulled.

I opened a case a few months back with support and they basically said it can't be done currently (7.4.1). I'm hoping this can now happen?

I then tried to get SCP working to download manually, but there was a bug with SCP/TFTP server that was preventing this from happening (spent 2 hours on screenshare with support and we were unable to get the TFTP server to start and run properly.

So I'm hopeful in 7.5 that either I can download the configs natively, or TFTP server is now working properly or better yet, BOTH!

Any tips or tricks greatly appreciated.

802.1x Report on Cisco Access Switches

$

Hello,

I need to figure out a way to run a report that gives me graphs of ports that have 802.1x configuration against ports that do not have 802.1x configuration. The test can be against one or multiple specific configuration lines in the switches running configuration (example: "mab" or "dot1x pae authenticator"). I have a report that is running in NCM Compliance Policy Reports but I need a better report that I can show management regarding our access layer compliance. I was thinking there might be a way to make this report in the report writer.

If anyone has ever done anything like this, I would love to get some help or assistance with creating this report.

Thanks!

Dave

NCM Firmware Upgrade Feature Request - VOTE

Currently only NCM Administrators & NPM Administrators can use the firmware upgrade features available.

We have tested, and these are working well, we are about to test the stack switch upgrade (another feature request coming so this is not a workaround) but I cannot give engineers the permissions without giving them system admin rights also!

under iso 27001 and psn compliance there must be appropriate separation of duties and security. You can have all staff who have permissions to upgrade firmware change any settings in the entire solarwinds system - including their own permissions!

Please vote using the below link - thank you

What is the difference between Admin Status and Operational Status

When I look at the "Interface Details" of one of my devices in NCM, I see that the "Admin Status" is up on my ppp interface while the "Status" (Operational Status) is down.  What is the difference between these fields?  My device is on a cellular network and the only way to communicate with the device is over the ppp interface.  I have a customer who is using NPM and is basically seeing the same "down" value when they view their node dashboard and the ppp interface.

HP ProCurve SNMPv3

I recently had to add some monitoring of HP switches to my Cisco network. HP switches are not my strong suit but I wanted to provide my documented steps to assist other people. Hopefully this will help someone else. The first part is the commands as I put them in the switch so you can see what happens. parts in red are the commands and the bold is what is going on. Part two is the commands only so you can copy and edit them for your deployment with out have to change a lot of stuff. Part 3 is the Orion server configuration.

HP  Switch SNMPv3 configuration (tested on ProCurve 2910al-24G)

HP_TEST_SWITCH(config)# snmpv3 enable                      enables SNMPv3

SNMPv3 Initialization process.

Creating user 'initial'                                                          creates SNMP user initial by default

Authentication Protocol: MD5

Enter authentication password: ******                                  sets MD5 password for user initial

Privacy protocol is DES

Enter privacy password: ******                                            sets DES password for user initial

User 'initial' is created

Would you like to create a user that uses SHA? No                exit SNMP wizard

User creation is done. SNMPv3 is now functional.

Would you like to restrict SNMPv1 and SNMPv2c messages to have read onlyaccess (you can set this later by the command 'snmp restrict-access'): no                        Keeps SNMPv1 and v2 enabled. Type yes if you want to disable them.

HP_TEST_SWITCH(config)#

HP_TEST_SWITCH(config)# snmpv3 user USER_NAME_YOU_CREATE auth md5 PASSWORD_YOU_CREATE priv aes PASSWORD_YOU_CREATE                creates a new SNMPv3 user you specify

HP_TEST_SWITCH(config)# snmpv3 group managerpriv user USER_NAME_YOU_CREATE sec-model ver3                                                                                  adds the user you created to the managerpriv group (this group is required)

HP_TEST_SWITCH(config)# no snmpv3 user initial                                                                                                                                                                          removes the SNMPv3 user “initial” for security reasons this is a best practice

HP_TEST_SWITCH(config)# ip authorized-managers XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX access operator                                                                                IP address should be set to the Orion server. This allows that IP access at the operator level

HP_TEST_SWITCH(config)# snmp-server response-source dst-ip-of-request                                                                                                                                    locks the source and destination allowed for the SNMP request.*

HP_TEST_SWITCH(config)# logging XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX                                                                                                                                                                  IP address should be the IP address of the Orion server. Send you switch logs your Orion server.

HP_TEST_SWITCH(config)#

Commands only

snmpv3 enable

Orion server SNMP settings

SNMP version: SNMPv3

Again hopefully this will help someone else in the future.

New to NCM

Hello

We just installed NCM, and Netflow. Right now I am mainly trying to get familiar with NCM so I can utilize it to make my life easier. I am a Jr Network Admin for an Enterprise atmosphere. Its a large oil refinery. Lots of switches out in the field. I would like to get it set up so that I do a lot from Solarwinds and have some scripts set up to just be able to execute..Here is a list of the things I want to be able to use it for. Hopefully I can get it all set up little by little.

To be able to execute commands from Solarwinds for basic troubleshooting, Vlan adds, changes, show log, show run, sh int status, etc

Set it up to detect various vulnerabilities

Notify me of end of life devices

Push firmware upgrades right from Solarwinds

maybe reload commands,

Is there a way to just import all my devices into NCM that are already being monitored in Solarwinds.

I plan on taking some of the online classes but for starters I would like to get everything set up to do the commands and services I use daily.

Maybe i can get input from anyone who has already set this up and are using it?

Thanks

Rob

Can anyone suggest from solutions for this?

Is there a way to have NCM check and edit ACLs?

$

Hello everyone! Hopefully I can get some assistance. I'm new to NCM, like I installed it this past Monday, so less than a week familiar with the product. Recently, we had an issue where we found that an important ACL (no compliance tool in place) was on some network devices, but not others. To add to the headache, in some places it was outdated.

I was introduced to the Script Manager today which is helpful. However, I'm wondering if there is a way to check every network device for an ACL and check the individual ACEs. So if the ACL is not there, to apply it, and check to see if it has the required lines, adding/removing as needed. We are an all Cisco shop if that helps.

I appreciate any help I can get with this issue. Thank you in advance.
